high-speed samhain

today i got up early and met the cable guy to install wired internet. i'm trading it for wireless internet because i'm trying to avoid unneeded microwave transmissions and can always use the added speed of cable.
everything went well. the cable guy disconnected the wireless connection and plugged my computer back into the big snakey cable tit while i drank coffee and observed.
after tcg went away, i started cleaning up the mess. that's when the fun started. i collected all the used wires from the various electronic discarded devices like modems, adapters, etc. i realized the now defunct wireless modem wire was taped to the computer power adapter cord. in my inane, half-asleep halfway caffienated condition i cut the cords apart.
unfortunately more than the tape got cut. the scissors completely severed the computer power cord before i had the chance to stop them. a few minutes later, the already strapped battery ran down and the computer clicked off. everything went quiet. there we were, with a brand new internet connection and no more computer. so i decided the closest place to try and get another adapter was the radio shack a couple of miles away. off i went. it was still earlier than i usually wake up and i was on the way to the electronics store.
happy halloween. at the radio shack an employee dressed as a zombie pirate informed me they didn't carry that brand of adapter, and sold me some solder, wire strippers and a soldering iron. i went back home, in the rain, thank goodness my wheelchair still had power, and started trying to solder. i lasted about five minutes when i realized this would never work. wrong type of wire, wrong type of person, hopeless situation, etc.
then i realized there was a computer store the opposite direction from the radio shack, about the same distance away. so i called first, and learned they did have replacement adapters. off i went into the rain again. at the computer store, i learned i needed the computer model number to get the exact replacement. they forgot to tell me about that on the phone i guess. so i got the best guess of adapters available one hundred dollars ago and came back home. on the way i stopped at the market in chinatown and got food for dinner.
of course it was the wrong adapter. so i checked the model number on my computer and went back to the store, in the rain. at the store, i said hello again, traded my merchandise, said good-bye again and came back home again to put everything back together again. after things got back up and running, it was time for dinner, my first meal of the day.
it's nice to be able to get broken things repaired in less than 24 hours, no matter how many showers it takes.
trick or treat
